Origo Industries converts coconut shell and husk — residue that is otherwise burned in the open — into certified-grade biochar at our pyrolysis facility in Kilifi, Kenya. Every tonne is weighed, batched and traceable to a named supplier.

WHY THIS FEEDSTOCK

On Kenya’s coast, carbon is burned in the open every day.

Kenya’s coconut belt produces hundreds of millions of shells and husks a year. Coconut shell is roughly 30% fixed carbon by dry weight — one of the cleanest, densest biomass feedstocks anywhere. Almost all of it is burned at the edge of the farm or left to rot.

Burned in the open, that carbon is in the atmosphere within minutes, along with smoke that settles in the lungs of whoever stands closest. Converted under controlled pyrolysis, the same shell holds its carbon for centuries — and improves soil while it does it.

The difference between those two outcomes is a plant, a price and a buyer. We have the plant. We pay the price. We’re looking for the buyers.

At full two-shift operation the facility processes 528 tonnes of residue a month and produces roughly 143 tonnes of biochar — in the order of 356 tCO₂e of durable removal, month after month.

Carbon removal is only worth what you can prove. Our operating discipline and our evidence base are the same system:

Traceable feedstock

Every tonne received is weighed at our weighbridge and recorded against a named supplier in our register. Provenance isn’t reconstructed later — it’s captured at the gate.

Batch-level records

Every production batch is weighed, sampled and logged: feedstock in, biochar out, moisture, screening. The batch record follows the product to dispatch.

Certification pathway

We are pursuing European Biochar Certificate (EBC) accreditation, with independent laboratory testing against published specifications. Status shared openly with buyers on request.

Digital MRV ready

Production, provenance and batch data are structured for digital monitoring, reporting and verification from day one — built to plug into registry and dMRV platforms.

IMPACT, MEASURED

A coconut, sold twice. The second sale stays in Kilifi.

Kilifi County’s poverty headcount is 46.4%. Our feedstock network exists only if thousands of households and village consolidators are paid — reliably, monthly, by mobile money against a weighbridge ticket, at a posted price — for material that had no buyer last year.

That is not a CSR programme attached to a carbon project. It’s the supply chain. Every shilling paid to a collector is recovered in the sale of a product a customer wanted — which is why the income is durable, not grant-funded.

POSITION

Coastal production, export-ready.

Our site at Kaloleni sits inside one of the densest coconut residue catchments in East Africa, with practical access to Mombasa Port, the SGR railway and Mombasa International Airport. Dense feedstock on one side, deep-water export logistics on the other — a combination not readily replicable elsewhere in Kenya.

For European buyers this means physical product — bulk or bagged biochar — can ship from Mombasa, while carbon offtake requires nothing to move at all.
